Hi my name is Kerrie Kennedy, I have made Prince Rupert and Port Edward my home since 1992. I am a wife and a mother of 1 who keeps me grounded and laughing everyday. My health journey began when I was 27, I was never athletic as a child and always tried to get out of gym. However, if I didn’t change the way I ate and moved, genetics was going to win. My heaviest weight was 300lbs, I smoked a pack/day, drank too much and ate way too much unhealthy food.
I started out slowly by going to the gym every morning at 6am (yes I know... but I figured by the time my brain clued in to what was happening it was too late), trading cigs and coffee for toast and peanut butter for breakfast, choosing better foods, cutting down on my alcohol intake, and controlling portions; I started to notice small changes! There were many times that I wanted to give up, but thought even though I couldn’t see the physical changes on the outside, I knew and could feel the HUGE transformations going on in the inside!
Soon after I was encouraged almost 14 years ago to become a Spin Instructor through BCRPA by my good friend Karen Cruz. I taught Spin classes for many years then took a brief break to have my son and care for him until he was almost 2 years old. That is when I became re-certified in Group Fitness (with the help of another good friend Barb Taylor-nee Long), Personal Trainer, and a Healthy Eating/Weight Loss Coach through CanFitPro. I have been teaching Core and Strength/Tone classes at the Prince Rupert Recreation centre ever since and have been grateful to teach these classes and see the changes in the participants and my clients!
My dream has always been to open a fitness studio like ours and I am very excited to be starting this adventure with Karen. To share our combined passion, enthusiasm, and love of fitness that will get your heart pumping and body sweating in a FUN atmosphere. So, no matter where you are at in life; know that even the smallest changes in a positive way can make the biggest difference inside out
My yoga career started many years ago when I went to my first class in a small yoga studio right here in Prince Rupert. To be honest, I felt that it really wasn’t for me at first. I found it extremely difficult to turn off my mind and felt that it was a bit too slow for me. I was always of the mind that if I were exercising, my heart should be racing and it should be more of the “extreme” type of exercise rather than that of the slower pace of yoga. Luckily I did not give up and quickly realized that yoga can get your heart racing, does build muscles and most importantly helps bring peace and calmness to a racing mind.
In 2000 I signed up for Pilates and aerobic classes with Rhona Parsons. Rhona and I became fast friends and she encouraged me to take the courses needed to become a fitness instructor. In 2002 I became BCRPA certified and taught various fitness classes such as step aerobics, hi/low impact aerobics, stretch and strength and spin. Later that same year, I took the Stott Pilates Mat and Reformer certification courses and started to teach Pilates as well. I realized that my passion was more Pilates and Spin than the regular aerobics classes so I continued to focus on that.
With Rhona’s guidance I began teaching yoga classes and in July of 2004 I became certified in Hatha Yoga instructor with Integral Fitness & Yoga in Victoria.
In November of 2004 I moved to Belize, Central America to teach yoga at a resort for 6 months and ended up staying there for 7 years. I was so lucky to be able to teach and practice yoga in the serene jungle setting of Belize – it was an experience I will cherish forever. I returned to Prince Rupert 6 years ago and am very happy to be back here in this beautiful little town that I will always call home.
Since returning to Prince Rupert, I have become certified with “Kidding Around Yoga” (kids yoga), BUTI Yoga, and most recently completed my 200HR RYT with Yoga Medicine (Tiffany Cruikshank).
Health and fitness is a never-ending journey where you learn something new with every practice. As the years go on, I realize more and more what a very important role Fitness and Yoga plays in my life, every day. I am so excited to be starting this new fitness studio with Kerrie so that we can share our passion for fun and challenging fitness classes with our community.
